Copies, Clones and Replicants - New Powerman 5000 Album!

My all-time favorite band ever, Powerman 5000, released a new CD yesterday! Every track is a cover, which they do an amazing job of forming to their unique style. Even my music-snob coworkers thought the covers were excellent!

The originals are the following random array of older songs:
20th Century Boy (T.Rex)
Electric Avenue (Eddy Grant)
Whip It (Devo)
Jump (Van Halen)
Space Oddity (David Bowie)
One Thing Leads To Another (The Fixx)
Candy-O (The Cars)
Devil Inside (INXS)
Pop Muzik (M)
Should I Stay Or Should I Go (The Clash)
We're Not Gonna Take It (Twisted Sister)
Under The Milky Way (The Church)

I think my favorites are Should I Stay or Should I Go and Devil Inside. The only one I'm not really excited about is Space Oddity. That one is just strange and to me it sounds like the one Powerman 5000 altered least.

Anyway, it's a fantastic album. Especially if you like ironic yet awesome covers. And who doesn't like those?

Tegan & Sara - Sentimental Tune

I bought Tegand & Sara's new CD recently and have been listening to it constantly. As always, their lyrics are really awesome. I am particularly captivating by the song "Sentimental Tune" and I decided to use it's lyrics in a little typography experiment, below. What do you think?

I used a ticket image from Belle Jar stock and tried to make the lyrics look all cool and stuff. Check out the song I'm talking about below.

Awesome Music: Ayria

So there's this band/singer that I can't stop listening to! She/it (not sure if the name corresponds with the whole band or just the lead singer!) Is Ayria. They opened for one of my all time favorite bands ever, VNV Nation, and since then Ayria has just kept growing on me.

Maybe it's how the lead singer seems to give a shit about her fans.

Maybe it's because the singer has such a beautiful and unusual voice which she uses to great effect.

Maybe it's because (most of...) the lyrics are very clever and make the world sound like a much more interesting place than I have ever found it to be.

Maybe it's the freaking badass nature of the music, with a female lead singer who doesn't suck!

Here is some Ayria. Enjoy.

Winterborn by Cruxshadows

My new favorite song. This video is about a thousand times better than the actual music video, but it won't let me embed it here. I encourage you to watch it on Youtube though or otherwise hear it because it is a lovely song!

Winterborn by Cruxshadows

Have some lyrics:
Dry your eyes and quietly bear this pain with pride
For heaven shall remember the silent and the brave
And promise me they will never see, the fear within our eyes
(my eyes are closed)
We will give strength to those who still remain

So bury fear, for fate draws near
And hide the signs of pain
With noble acts, the bravest souls
Endure the heart's remains
Discard regret, that in this debt
A better world is made
That children of a newer day might remember
And avoid our fate

(I've waited all day in the pouring rain, but nobody came, no, nobody came)

And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be your light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith is come
That I have never known
I hear the angels call my name
And I am Winter born

Hold your head up high-for there is no greater love
Think of the faces of the people you defend
(you defend)
And promise me, they will never see the tears within our eyes
(my eyes are closed)
Although we are men, with mortal sins, angels never cry

So bury fear, for fate draws near
And hide the signs of pain
With noble acts, the bravest souls
Endure the heart's remains
Discard regret, that in this debt
A better world is made
That children of a newer day might remember
And avoid our fate

And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be your light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith in God
That I have never known
I hear the angels call my name
And I am Winter born

And in the fury of this darkest hour
I will be your light
A lifetime for this destiny
For I am Winter born
And in this moment..I will not run
It is my place to stand
We few shall carry hope
Within our bloodied hands
(bloodied hands)
And in our Dying, we're more alive-than we have ever been
I've lived for these few seconds
For I am Winter born

And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be the light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith in man
That I have never known
I hear the angels call my name
And I am Winter born

Within this moment now
I am for you, though better men have failed
I will give my life for love
For I am Winter born
And in my dying
I'm more alive, than I have ever been
I will make this sacrifice
For I am Winter born

Black Eyes by Snowden; Remix by Le Castle Vania

I wanted to share my favorite song at the moment! I find it to be incredibly beautiful and awesome. Ignore the video, there were no better ones I could find on youtube, which seems like the best way to share the song with you all.

Awesome Music: Hawksley Workman

I would like to introduce you all to one of my favorite musicians, Hawksley Workman. Hawksley is a Canadian, singer/songwriter/producer/player of practically everything. He produced albums for fellow Canadians Tegan & Sara.

A few of my personal favorite Hawksley Workman songs include:
Striptease
Jealous of Your Cigarette
Dirty and True

He's cute too! If you would like me to send you a complementary mix CD of my favorite of Hawksley's songs, be one of the first three to comment saying so here! If you like what you here, check out my fansite!

I LOVE the new Powerman 5000 Album!

My all time favorite band ever, Powerman 5000, released a brand new album today called "Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere" and it's very awesome. If you liked their last couple CDs, but thought the lyrics were just a little too subtle, you will love this one.

As always, they have lyrics made of cheese over seriously badass music with intros and interludes from what sound like obscure science fiction movies. They seem to be rapidly homing in on their successful formula. Maybe now we won't get anymore crap like "Car Crash" and we will get more awesomeness.

What I never really registered before this CD was their penchant for incredibly awkward rhyming. Certain phrases make me cringe hard. "You're dressing all in black/ from your front to your back"? Really?

They do have some hilariously memorable phrases as is their custom.
"Break down, this is it, Rockin like a terrorist" Not subtle there, although I am unsure just how terrorists rock.
"You're a killer of culture, a vulture of style." If I needed a new screenname I would be registering VultureOfStyle on every website I frequent.
Also, "Technology Eats it's Young" might be the best phrase I have ever heard.

It's awesome, that is all. Go buy it!

I Like Moonlight Shadow

Moonlight Shadow: prettiest song ever. I loved it in high school and today.

I heard the Missing Heart version in about 2002 and I was in love. The song appealed to me from its rhythm and beat, and when I heard the lyrics it made me cry. It made me sit through anime music videos featuring clips from shows I had never seen. About vampire.

"He was shot six times by a man on the run
and she couldn't find how to push through"

Then I heard the original, Maggie Reilly and Mike Oldfield version. I hated it at first, but it grew on me. Now, I acknowledge that it exists and in its own way is acceptable.

"The trees that whisper in the evening
Carried away by a moonlight shadow
Sing a song of sorrow and grieving
Carried away by a moonlight shadow"

Then I heard the Groove Coverage version and my love was renewed! At least as pretty as the Missing Heart version. Groove Coverage has a number of awesome songs other than Moonlight Shadow. I highly recommend God is a Girl and Poison. Yay! Also, the GC music video made me cry my brains out. And still sort of does.

Go listen to pretty music!
